It holds the food, water, shelter, first aid, fire and tools you need to be self-sufficient for roughly 72 hours.

Three days is the widely used planning window for emergency response. It's how long it typically takes for power, water and road access to be restored, or for you to reach somewhere safe. Everything in this kit is sized to that window.

Judge a kit by category coverage before item count. A complete bag has to cover all six: water, food, shelter and warmth, first aid, fire and light, and tools. Then check the quality inside each one. Look for a real water filter rather than purification tablets alone, a trauma kit with a tourniquet and chest seal rather than a box of adhesive bandages, a ferro rod that still throws sparks wet, a stated calorie count rather than a vague "food supply", and a pack rated to carry the loaded weight. Finally, check whether it arrives sealed and ready to grab or as a box of parts you still have to assemble yourself.

A complete, ready-to-carry 72-hour kit for one person generally runs between about $250 and $400. Below roughly $150 you are usually paying for filler: a thin emergency blanket, a token first aid pouch and no real water filtration.
